The German car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz will invest a billion euros in the construction of a new factory in Hungary, which will, as the company says, result in the creation of around 2,500 jobs.

A “flexible” factory, designed so that it can quickly be turned into factories for the production of various models, will be built next to the existing production facility in the Hungarian city of Kecskemet, it is said in the announcement by the board member Markus Schaefer, as reported by AFP.

The construction of the factory has been announced for 2018, and the production should, the company expects, start in 2020 or 2021, stated the spokesperson of Daimler, the parent company of Mercedes. The new factory will produce rear-wheel drive models and front-wheel drive models, AFP reports and reminds that Mercedes has been producing compact cars in the factory in Kecskemet, 70 km away from Budapest, since 2012.

The company officials announced in April an additional investment of EUR 580 million in modernization and expansion of the existing factory, which currently employs over 4,000 workers and which produced over 180,000 cars in 2015.

Daimler reported, in its quarterly results, published on July 21, a record sale of 761,334 vehicles and a net profit of EUR 2.45 billion, AFP reports.
