At the first meeting of the Serbian-Russian science and technology council for the implementation of the Belgrade Diameters project, the development of the city railway and the upgrade of the network of the rail transport system in Belgrade were discussed, Beoinfo reports.

The deputy mayor of Belgrade, Goran Vesic, said that the BG Voz project was one of the two most important projects in Belgrade. He added that BG Voz and the subway were two entirely different projects, which make up a whole, but are developed independently.

Talking about BG Voz, Vesic pointed out that it was especially important because it should connect the city center with suburban municipalities.

– BG Voz leans on the existing rail infrastructure, so we are not making a new railway, but using the existing one and extending it together with the Serbian Railways and the Government of Serbia, so that it would be put into the function of a city railway. Recently, we adopted the Law on the Subway and the City Railway – Vesic said.

When it comes to the suburban railway, it now exists in Belgrade, so there are two city lines, Batajnica-Ovca (31.3 km) and Resnik-Ovca (36 km) and two suburban lines, Mladenovac-Ovca (62 km) and Lazarevac-Ovca (68 km), Vesic said.

Russian Ambassador to Serbia Alexander Botsan-Kharchenko emphasized that the project deserved to be supported by the Russian Federation.

The Moscow Central Diameters is the name of the upgraded system of a suburban railway in the capital of Russia, that is, the lines which don’t end at the city center but continue to the periphery, like the RER system in Paris.

Ana Dimovski of the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure, said that the Belgrade Diameters project meant a development of the public railway structure for the ministry, all to the end of developing suburban transport.

– Advanced cities base their development of public city transport on rail transport, because the advantages are great, primarily in the form of reducing the negative environmental impact. That is why the competent ministry supported the City of Belgrade regarding the Belgrade Diameters project – said Ana Dimovski.
